Australian Professor “Jibrail Omer” Passes Away in Kabul

According to an Afghan media report, Australian professor Jibrail Omar, formerly known as Timothy Weeks, has passed away in Kabul at the age of 54.

The Afghan government confirmed the death of Jibrail Omar, citing that he had been battling with cancer for a long time before passing away.


The Australian professor widely known as his experience in 2016 when taken hostage by the Taliban Mujahideen along with an American colleague Kevin King, while booth serving as lecturers at the American University in Kabul.

Jibrail Omer and his colleague were held hostage for three years and released in 2019 in a prisoner swap. During his captivity he embraced Islam and adopted the name “Jibrail Omer”.

Jibrail Omar returned in Kabul in 2022 to mark first anniversary of the establishment of the Islamic Emirate government in Afghanistan, wearing traditional Afghan attire.

The government said Jibrail Omar, has chosen to live in Kabul, where he contributed to education as an English Teacher.
