In 2024, because of inadequate health facilities the citizens of Sindh province faced a relentless menace of epidemic diseases caused by contaminated water and deadly viruses in addition to different types of fever.
The substandard health care services left thousands affected and claimed hundreds of lives, underscoring the dire state of public health infrastructure in the region.
According to the health experts, throughout the year, the people of Sindh contended with variety of deadly diseases including Typhoid, Dengue, Malaria and HIV/AIDS.
According to the Health Department of Sindh, over 6,000 cases of extensively drug resistant (XDR) Typhoid fever were reported in 2024. Additional 2,605 dengue cases have been recorded out of which 2,130 were recorded only in Karachi, the capital city of Sindh.
Alarmingly, over 0.3 million malaria cases reported across the province. As per the statistics, Naegleria fowleri, brain eating amoeba found in clean water, claims five lives. Furthermore, five cases of Congo virus were also reported out of which one person lost his life.
A record 0.5 million cases of Diarrhea were attributed to unsafe drinking water, revealing a severe failure in sanitation and water management systems.
This year, 3176 people were affected by the deadly HIV AIDS across Sindh, out of which 483 people died.
Most shocking is the ongoing most deadly HIV/AIDS in the province. Statistics of health department shows 3176 news cases were reported in 2024, with 483 fatalities.
Climate change has also affected the province, Karachi, Sind’s largest city also suffered the brunt of heat wave, which claimed 54 lives.
Conversely, despite these alarming figures, the health minister of Sind, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, described the performance of her department as “Satisfactory”.
